Ceramic Sculptures 2019
The following series is a collection of small ceramic works created for a solo exhibition at the Third Quarter Gallery, Brisbane.
This collection of 3-dimensional artworks is Wilson’s contemplation on society’s innate desire to craft meaning, and the individual’s pursuit to craft moral values informed by these experiences. The work provokes enquiry into the experience of the infinite, and how we choose to attribute meaning and significance to objects to prompt understanding of profound, existential concepts.
A certain meaning is only relative to a particular space or cultural setting because of that which has come before. ‘Relative Meaning’ expresses the emotions associated with Wilson’s exploration of where meaning comes from, and how it is built by the individual. It presents the emptiness of life without meaning by spotlighting voids and celebrating negative space within form.
The world we inhabit is considered a compilation of building blocks of assumed values. Wilson believes that new meaning can only be given to something if it acknowledges that which came before.
